Phidgets in Higher and University Education Do you like to demonstrate scientific phenomena to your students or do you like your students to discover scientific phenomena themselves? Do you want your students to be able to easily and quickly make working prototypes of robots and other interactive machines? Do you like to introduce programming and the control of electronics in an educative and stimulating way? Then we would like to introduce the PHIDGETS USB interface Kits to you! Applications of Phidgets in Education Educates control of electronic components, performing measurements and human interaction by means of a PC. Phidgets can be controlled in an uncomplicated manner via many different software development environments e.g. Microsoft Visual C, .NET, Visual Basic, Java, Adobe Flash, Linux and even Microsoft Excel and Explorer. A SDK for the communication between hardware and application is available. This gives the opportunity to everybody to connect electronic components directly to a PC in order to have direct, tangible and measurable feedback from and to any application! Apart from physical feedback and performing measurements there are many other applications possible using Phidgets. Phidgets are supported by several control applications, e.g. LabVIEW. Such applications do not need any programming in order to work with Phidget components. Programming Phidgets via the PC is of course very easy compared to programming microcontrollers. Properties of Phidgets Phidgets are easy to program components connected to the PC via USB. These components have several digital in- and outputs and analogue outputs that can be controlled and used via a standardised (Open source) library and SDK from various applications and programming languages. Phidgets come with a wide range of plug-and-play sensors that can be connected to your PC or Phidget Interface. These include: light, temperature, pressure, magnetism, acidity (Ph), touch, acceleration (and tilt), rotation, distance measurement, motion, moisture, voltage and power. Specific applications such as controlling servos, dc motors and reading RFID tags are possible using special Phidget interfaces. It is of course possible to extend the wide range of available Phidget sensors with your own specific sensor. Phidget interface boards can utilise sensors in a 0-5V range and measure in a 10 bit resolution and frequency of 100 Hz. More information EZtronics is the official distributor of Phidget products in Europe, based in The Netherlands. We like to give you more information regarding the ample possibilities of using Phidgets within Educational and Research projects. At this very moment there are already many applications of Phidgets in different Universities and polytechnics, also many companies are using Phidgets, e.g. In designing working prototypes of their products and ideas.
